The Oyo State House of Assembly has reaffirmed the critical role of women in driving societal growth, celebrating them as pillars of strength, resilience, and dedication across families, workplaces, and communities, despite mounting economic challenges and responsibilities.
This was the central message at the third edition of the International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Oyo State Chapter (Women’s Wing). The event, themed “Give to Gain,” took place at the House of Chiefs within the Assembly Complex in Ibadan, on Thursday.
Speaking on behalf of the Wife of the Speaker, Mrs. Olamidun Ogundoyin, her representative, Mrs. Rebecca Oparinde, highlighted the courage and leadership consistently displayed by women, even in difficult times. She noted that women continue to play vital roles in sustaining families under economic pressure, while also excelling in governance, entrepreneurship, and community development.
According to her, women are not only supporting households but are also stepping into leadership, building businesses, and creating opportunities where none previously existed. She stressed that the theme “Give to Gain” reflects the power of collective support among women, explaining that when women uplift one another through mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and opportunity creation, the impact is multiplied and sustained across generations.
She further commended female lawmakers in the state, noting that their presence in governance goes beyond representation, serving as a beacon of possibility for young girls aspiring to leadership. She also recognised the often-unseen contributions of the wives of honourable members, describing them as strong support systems behind the scenes. PASAN members were encouraged to remain professional, diligent, and committed in their responsibilities.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Rahman Edith Olufunmilayo urged women to prioritise personal development, invest in self-growth, and intentionally mentor younger girls. She emphasised that the idea of “women supporting women” should go beyond rhetoric and become a consistent way of life that strengthens communities.
Other speakers echoed similar sentiments. The Chairman of the House Committee on Culture and Tourism, Hon. Mrs. Michael Olubisi Margaret, described women as indispensable to nation-building, stressing that no society can thrive without them. She called for stronger family values and encouraged women to foster healthy relationships at home to ensure proper upbringing of children.
In a goodwill message, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Hon. Mrs. Toyin Balogun, represented by Mrs. Temitope Alice, noted that the event’s theme highlights the importance of investing in women and vulnerable groups as a strategy for building resilient communities. She outlined initiatives of the current administration under Governor Seyi Makinde, including support for women-led businesses, improved access to finance through cooperative systems, and the SAfER programme aimed at cushioning economic hardship for vulnerable households.
She added that the government’s commitment to inclusive governance reflects a deliberate effort to promote gender equality and sustainable development.
Also speaking, the Clerk of the House, Barr. Mrs. Taiwo Muraina-Akinola, described International Women’s Day as a global platform for celebrating women’s achievements while advocating gender equity. She noted that giving should not be seen as a loss but as an investment that yields long-term benefits for both individuals and society.
In his remarks, PASAN Chairman in Oyo State, Comrade Alade Olayemi Taofeek, said the occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions of women to societal advancement. He called on stakeholders to champion inclusive policies, create enabling environments, and support women through mentorship and access to resources.
The event drew several dignitaries, including Mrs. Olamidun Ogundoyin (represented by Mrs. Rebecca Oparinde); Hon. Mrs. Olajide Olufunke Comforter; Hon. Mrs. Michael Olubisi Margaret; Hon. Mrs. Toyin Balogun (represented by Mrs. Temitope Alice); and PASAN National Women Leader, Comrade Yembe Chille (represented by Mrs. Kolawole), among others.
