The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached on Thursday during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, where key electoral matters were reviewed.
In a statement issued by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the Commission confirmed the postponement.
“Following deliberations, the Commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 general election,” the statement read.
INEC explained that the voter revalidation exercise remains a critical part of its constitutional mandate to maintain an accurate and credible National Register of Voters.
According to the Commission, the exercise is designed to verify existing voter records, correct personal data, eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries, and enhance the overall integrity of the voter database.
The postponement means that the current voter register will remain in use for the 2027 general elections, while plans for revalidation will be revisited afterwards.
