The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa 1 has appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene in addressing persistent ecological problems affecting parts of Ibadan metropolis.
The traditional ruler made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja during a visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, according to a statement issued by his Media Aide, Adeola Oloko.
Oba Ladoja acknowledged previous interventions by the Federal Government and the World Bank on the Ogunpa Channelization Project but noted that the ecological challenges extend beyond the already recognized areas.
He explained that while Ogunpa-related flooding has drawn attention partly because it affects elitist neighborhoods such as Mokola, Ekotedo, Ogunpa, Oke-Ado and Molete, other vulnerable communities have been largely overlooked.
He urged the Federal Government to also focus on the spotlight of residents in areas such as Oranyan, Kudeti, Agbongbon and other inner-city communities, describing their experience during the rainy season as devastating.
According to the monarch, “What the numerous people encounter along this route during the rainy season is better imagined than told,” stressing that the affected residents are largely low-income earners who lack the resources to mitigate the impact of flooding.
Responding, the SGF, Dr Akume, said he was not surprised by the visit, noting that it reflected the Olubadan’s deep concern for the welfare of his people. He commended the monarch for his leadership and assured him of the Federal Government’s readiness to act.
Dr Akume stated that the Federal Government would do everything possible to assist in addressing the ecological challenges confronting Ibadan communities.
The Olubadan was accompanied on the visit by Fatai Buhari, Senator representing Oyo North, and Sharafadeen Alli, Senator representing Oyo South, among other dignitaries.
