The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has announced full enforcement of a zero-tolerance policy on illegal parking across Oyo State ahead of Crossover Night celebrations.
The directive, issued by the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd), will take effect during the high-traffic period of December 31 and continue beyond the festivities as part of sustained traffic control and road safety efforts.
In a statement released in Ibadan, Major Adesagba said the measure had become necessary due to anticipated heavy vehicular movement and large public gatherings associated with Crossover Night.
“Our focus on Crossover Night is uncompromising,” he said. “To prevent traffic congestion, disorder and, most importantly, loss of lives, all forms of illegal parking will attract immediate and strict sanctions. This is not merely for convenience; it is a critical public safety measure.”
He stressed that illegal parking remains a danger beyond festive periods, warning motorists against habitual traffic violations.
“Parking on highways, walkways and kerbs, or abandoning vehicles on the road, is dangerous and unacceptable at any time. These actions put lives at risk daily, and OYRTMA’s enforcement duty is continuous,” the chairman added.
The Authority reiterated that the following offences are strictly prohibited at all times:

Parking on highways, walkways and kerbs

Parking articulated vehicles and trucks on road shoulders and medians

Abandoning faulty or broken-down vehicles on highways or public roads
Major Adesagba noted that vehicle breakdowns would not be accepted as an excuse for road obstruction, stressing that motorists are responsible for promptly removing such vehicles to avoid endangering other road users.
To ensure rapid response during the festive period, OYRTMA disclosed that its emergency response lines would remain active. Members of the public can report accidents, vehicle breakdowns or illegally parked vehicles via 0912 888 8878 or 0704 700 0594.
He further assured residents that OYRTMA patrol teams would be fully deployed across major highways and inner roads throughout Crossover Night and beyond. Vehicles found violating traffic regulations will be impounded without notice, while offenders may face fines and prosecution.
“Let Crossover Night reflect responsible citizenship,” Major Adesagba said. “Celebrate wisely, park legally and protect one another. Let safe and lawful conduct guide us not only on this night, but throughout the New Year and beyond.”
