The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, December 25; Thursday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and the New Year celebrations.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made that announcement through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.
In the statement, the minister extended festive greetings to Christians across Nigeria and around the world, while also wishing all Nigerians a joyful holiday season.
Dr Tunji-Ojo called on Christians to reflect on the principles of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice symbolised by the birth of Jesus Christ, noting that these values remain vital for promoting unity, tolerance, and national harmony.
He further encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the festive period to pray for the peace, security, and sustained development of the country, while supporting government initiatives aimed at strengthening national cohesion.
“The Christmas season and the New Year offer an opportunity for citizens to deepen unity, show compassion, and renew their commitment to building a stronger nation,” the minister stated.
The Interior Minister also urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, remain law-abiding and security-conscious, and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday period.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
