Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party have declared that “the party must not die” following an emergency stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja amid the leadership crisis triggered by the Supreme Court judgment.
The position, read by Muazu Babangida Aliyu, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, on behalf of PDP governors and critical stakeholders, reaffirmed support for the Board of Trustees’ assumption of leadership under Adolphus Wabara.
The stakeholders said the Supreme Court judgment, delivered by a panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, effectively left the party without a recognised leadership after dismissing appeals tied to the November 2025 national convention in Ibadan.
According to them, the ruling nullified the convention that produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee and upheld the suspension of key officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu and others.
“The interpretation of this judgment clearly leaves the party without any recognised leadership, as both groups previously laying claims have been divested,” the statement read.
The stakeholders said they could not allow the party to become rudderless, backing the BoT’s move to step in as a stabilising authority.
They called on the Board of Trustees to urgently convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee to decide on a new leadership structure and begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Among key figures involved in ongoing consultations are Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
The stakeholders also urged members to remain loyal and united, warning against any attempt to weaken the party or align it with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“Democracy thrives when there is a vibrant opposition that reflects the interest of the people, not the government,” the statement added.
They assured that a comprehensive action plan would soon be unveiled after consultations with the BoT and other organs of the party.
Reaffirming their resolve, the stakeholders declared that the PDP would survive the crisis and emerge stronger.
“By God’s grace, our party will not die. Like the phoenix, we will rise again,” the statement concluded.
