The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees has assumed control of the party’s national leadership as an emergency stakeholders’ meeting holds in Abuja to address the deepening crisis triggered by a Supreme Court judgment.
The high level meeting, which took place in Asokoro, Abuja, has drawn key organs of the party, including the Board of Trustees, PDP Governors’ Forum, National Executive Committee, National Assembly caucus, state chairmen, and other stakeholders.
In a statement, Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the board stepped in to prevent a leadership vacuum following the apex court’s decision to nullify the party’s November 2025 national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The judgment invalidated the convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki led National Working Committee, while also upholding the suspension of key officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade.
According to the board, the ruling renders all actions taken by the affected leadership, including the appointment of an acting national chairman and the March 29, 2026 convention in Abuja, null and void.
The development effectively dissolves the existing leadership structures within the party, placing the responsibility of national leadership on the Board of Trustees in line with the party’s constitution.
The Board of Trustees stated that it has immediately assumed responsibility of the national working leadership of the party as a constitutional step to stabilise its structure.
To chart a path forward, the board disclosed that an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee would be convened to appoint an interim National Working Committee to manage the party’s affairs and ensure readiness for the 2027 general elections.
Among prominent figures at the centre of ongoing consultations are Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, alongside other party leaders working to restore unity and direction.
Party staff have also been directed to resume at the national secretariat under the supervision of the Board of Trustees pending the emergence of a new leadership structure.
The board commended party stakeholders for their resilience during the crisis and urged members to set aside personal interests in favour of collective unity.
It added that the time has come for reconciliation and a new direction for the party.
The outcome of the ongoing Abuja meeting is expected to shape the party’s next steps as it seeks to resolve its leadership crisis and reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
