UK, Canada strengthen cooperation on trade, defence and AI

The United Kingdom and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence and artificial intelligence following talks between their prime ministers in the UK.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday evening, with discussions focused on bilateral relations and closer cooperation with European partners, particularly in trade and defence.

Starmer welcomed Canada’s move to become the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme, GCAP, during the summer. The two leaders also discussed strengthening defence cooperation, including the work of the Multilateral Defence Mechanism and the Defence Security Resilience Bank.

Artificial intelligence was also discussed, with both leaders considering the opportunities and challenges associated with the technology. They agreed on the importance of governments and technology companies working together to address shared concerns and protect users online.

The meeting took place before the two leaders watched Everton’s Carabao Cup third round match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. Everton won 1-0 through an 80th minute goal from substitute Charly Alcaraz and advanced to the fourth round.

The British government said Starmer and Carney looked forward to further discussions as both countries continue to deepen cooperation across key areas.
