Fresh indications have emerged that the position of the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, may soon come under threat as moves to unseat him intensify.
Sources within the state’s political circle revealed that plans to remove the 39-year-old lawmaker, who has held the speakership for nearly seven years, are already at an advanced stage, with only last-minute changes capable of halting the process.
According to insiders, discussions are ongoing to replace Ogundoyin with his deputy, Fadeyi Mohammed, who represents Ona Ara State Constituency and is currently serving his second term in the Assembly.
It was further gathered that if the plan succeeds, the Chief Whip, Gbenga Oyekola, who represents Atiba State Constituency, may be elevated to the position of Deputy Speaker.
Ogundoyin, who has been representing Ibarapa East since 2018 following a by-election triggered by the death of former Speaker Michael Adeyemo, is alleged to be facing internal opposition over claims of anti-party activities.
He has also been linked in some quarters to alleged moves against Governor Seyi Makinde, although he has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
Developments took a new turn on Tuesday morning, as some lawmakers reportedly began distancing themselves from the Speaker, following a late-night meeting held at the Government House, which he was said to have attended.
However, not all members of the Assembly appear to be aligned with the move. A lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that efforts are still ongoing behind the scenes to prevent Ogundoyin’s removal.
The situation remains fluid, with political observers closely watching how events unfold in the coming days.
