‘Nigeria’s Political Space Can Corrupt the Best of Us’ – Mr Macaroni

Nigerian comedian and social commentator Mr Macaroni has explained why he is not interested in pursuing a career in politics, saying the country’s political space can affect even people who were once highly respected.

Mr Macaroni made the remarks in a viral video while discussing the challenges of speaking up for Nigerians and the backlash that can follow. He said people who advocate for citizens sometimes end up being criticised by the same people they seek to represent.

The comedian said his observations of Nigeria’s political space have made him reluctant to venture into politics, adding that he has seen people he once respected enter politics and, in his view, damage the legacies they had built.

He also criticised what he described as Nigerians’ tendency to quickly move on from economic challenges after initially expressing outrage. Referring to rising fuel prices, he said public complaints often last only briefly before people move on to other issues.

Mr Macaroni further questioned the idea that Nigerians should take pride in being able to survive difficult conditions, arguing that the ability to endure hardship should not be treated as something to celebrate.
