Fire Destroys Goods Worth Millions of Naira in 15 Shops at Ibadan’s Bodija Market

Goods and properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed after a fire engulfed 15 shops at Bodija Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Monday.

The incident affected 15 out of a row of 44 shops, according to the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, who confirmed the outbreak.

Akinwande said firefighters were immediately mobilised to the market after receiving information about the incident.

He explained that upon arrival, the fire service crew found the affected shops engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises.

The fire service chairman attributed the outbreak to an electrical surge. However, further details about the circumstances that led to the surge were not provided.

No casualties were recorded in the incident, according to Akinwande.

Although goods worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed, the total value of the losses and the full extent of the damage to the affected shops have yet to be determined.

The incident comes after the commissioning of a new fire station at Bodija Market in August 2026, as part of infrastructure projects executed by Ibadan North Local Government. The facility was intended to strengthen emergency response and improve safety around the market.
