The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced its petrol pump price to ₦1,370 per litre in Abuja, days after raising it to ₦1,405 per litre over the weekend.
A market survey conducted on Monday showed that NNPCL retail outlets had lowered their prices by ₦35 per litre, returning to the previous rate of ₦1,370.
The revised price was observed at the company’s filling stations in Berger, Wuse Zone 6 and Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja.
The adjustment comes amid recent petrol price increases by other fuel retailers, including MRS, and ongoing discussions over measures to ease the cost of petrol for consumers.
NNPCL is also offering a ₦66-per-litre discount to motorists who purchase fuel through its recently introduced mobile application. The discount is subject to the company’s stated conditions and is not automatically available to every customer paying at the pump.
Last Thursday, the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, proposed a petrol price of ₦1,350 per litre at NNPCL filling stations, prompting debate over whether the arrangement amounted to a return to fuel subsidy.
Oyedele and the Presidency rejected that interpretation, describing the measure as a discount rather than a reinstatement of the former fuel subsidy regime.
The latest price reduction brings the cost at the surveyed NNPCL outlets below the weekend rate, although the reported ₦1,370 price remains ₦20 above the ₦1,350 figure proposed by the finance minister.
The development highlights continuing changes in petrol pump prices following the removal of fuel subsidy, with motorists facing varying rates depending on the retailer and applicable discounts.
The latest adjustment was reported at selected NNPCL outlets in Abuja. Prices at other locations may differ.
