Police officers reportedly fired tear gas at pensioners who gathered at the Lagos House in Ikeja on Monday to demand the payment of outstanding entitlements.
The protesters, comprising members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, were demanding the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards.
The pensioners also called on the Lagos State Government to settle outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they said were owed to them.
The retirees converged on the Lagos House to draw the attention of the state government to issues affecting their welfare and to demand urgent action on their unpaid entitlements.
However, the protest was disrupted after police officers reportedly deployed tear gas at the demonstrators.
The action forced some of the pensioners to disperse from the area, while the development heightened tension at the scene.
The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the use of force against them, insisting that they had gathered peacefully to demand benefits they were entitled to receive.
Their demands reportedly include the implementation of pension-related increases, payment of outstanding pension arrears and settlement of wage awards.
The pensioners had previously given August 31 as a deadline for the payment of outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.
The latest protest comes amid concerns over the welfare of retirees and delays in the payment of pension-related benefits.
