The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has commissioned the first secondary school in Temidire Community, Ibarapa East Local Government Area, describing it as a major milestone in the history of Eruwa.
The commissioning, held on Tuesday, February 17, formed part of activities marking the Speakerโs 39th birthday anniversary.
The newly constructed school building comprises two blocks of three and four classrooms respectively, with administrative offices for the principal and students in each block, as well as toilet facilities.
Speaking at the event, the Speaker stated that education remains the foundation of sustainable development and emphasized that no community can truly progress without access to quality secondary education. He noted that the project reflects his commitment to grassroots development and equal educational opportunities for rural communities, stressing that the school would reduce hardship for families and improve academic outcomes for students in the area.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Speakerโs Chief of Staff, Bayo Olaniyan, revealed that Temidire Community consists of 46 villages with only two private and eight public primary schools prior to the commissioning of the new secondary school. He said the project fulfills one of the Speakerโs campaign promises to the people of Eruwa.
In his goodwill message, the Otun Olori of Temidire, Chief Olatunji Adio, disclosed that the community had written to the Oyo State Government for over 20 years requesting the establishment of a secondary school. He commended the Speaker for making the long-awaited dream a reality.
Representing the State Governor, the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola commended the initiative, stating that the best investment in life is education and describing the project as a step in the right direction for community development.
Meanwhile, teachers in the community have expressed relief over the development. One teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity to our correspondent, said transportation has long been a major challenge for students seeking secondary education. She explained that although the nearest secondary school in Eruwa is about 30 minutes away, students often spend close to two hours waiting for transportation to schools outside the community.
Another teacher, Giwa Adeyemi, noted that the situation has equally affected teachers. He added that the nearest alternative school is as far as Ogun State, and during the rainy season, a river at the boundary makes it difficult for students and teachers to cross.
The new secondary school is expected to significantly ease transportation challenges and expand access to education for students across Temidire Community and its 46 surrounding villages.
