The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected notorious kidnapper operating across state lines, alongside the recovery of a firearm, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
According to a press statement released by the State Police Public Relations Office, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka on Sunday, the breakthrough was made possible through timely and credible information provided by a vigilant member of the public. The tip-off revealed that three armed men, reportedly carrying an AK-47 rifle and other weapons, were sighted around forest and farmland areas in Ikoyi-Ile.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a joint security team led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Ikoyi-Ile Division mobilised to the area. The operatives carried out a thorough combing of the surrounding bushes, which led to the arrest of one suspect, identified as Muhammadu Abubakar.
Items recovered from the suspect include an AK-47 rifle with breach number 6628/2274, six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and three live cartridges.
Police authorities described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb violent crimes across the state.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to involvement in multiple kidnapping operations along the Ogbomoso–Ikoyi-Ile axis and is said to be cooperating with ongoing investigations. Further findings reveal that the command had been monitoring him and that he has connections to cross-border criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further discreet investigation. Meanwhile, security operatives have launched a manhunt to apprehend other members of the gang who are currently at large.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the CP praised their professionalism and commitment to intelligence-driven policing. He also acknowledged the support and leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, noting that his strategic guidance has continued to strengthen operational efficiency nationwide.
The Command reiterated the importance of public collaboration in tackling crime, urging residents to continue providing timely and reliable information to security agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and security, the Police assured residents that all necessary resources are being deployed to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes across Oyo State.
The authorities are actively conducting investigations and making progress in apprehending the remaining suspects.
