Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday named the newly completed Oyo State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kunmi Mustapha House, while challenging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, to demonstrate tangible impacts of his political influence on the PDP in Rivers State.
Governor Makinde made the remarks during the official commissioning of the party’s new secretariat located at Oke-Ado, Ibadan, amid ongoing tensions within the PDP at the national level.
He dismissed claims of external interference in the affairs of the party in Oyo State, stating that internal instability which had plagued the PDP since 2015 had been resolved. He also apologised to party members for aligning with “wrong political elements” during the 2023 election cycle, noting that he had since recommitted fully to the party.
Governor Makinde said his administration had consistently rewarded loyalty, dedication and hard work within the PDP, citing the construction of party secretariats at the state and South-West levels as evidence of his commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. He also expressed confidence in the judiciary, saying truth and justice would ultimately prevail in resolving internal party disputes.
In separate remarks, the Oyo State PDP Chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro; former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu; wife of a former Oyo State governor, Alhaja Mutiat Ladoja; and Chairman of the PDP Elders’ Council in the state, Dr Saka Balogun, commended Makinde’s leadership and pledged the party’s commitment to retaining power beyond 2027.
Earlier, the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, described the new secretariat as a legacy project and urged party members to remain united and focused despite political challenges.
The event attracted PDP leaders from across the South-West and other parts of the country, including members of the National and State Assemblies.
