The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohammed Janabi, disclosed this in a post on X on Monday, October 26, following the evacuation of the pair by air ambulance.
Janabi said the patient, who is a Swiss citizen, was clinically stable after receiving treatment from Nigerian medical personnel, who successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness.
He commended the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners for their role in containing the situation, describing the response as evidence of effective collaboration in public health.
Despite the evacuation, Janabi stressed that surveillance and follow-up would continue, with Nigerian authorities monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case. Switzerland will oversee the continued management of the patient and monitor her husband, identified as the 53rd contact.
The development follows the confirmation of an Ebola case in Nigeria, which prompted health authorities to activate response measures and trace people who may have been exposed to the virus.
The WHO has urged continued vigilance even as Nigeria records no current Ebola cases following the evacuation.
