Ebola Scare: Oyo Activates Emergency Centres, Says No Confirmed Cases in State

Oyo State Government has urged residents to remain calm but vigilant amid concerns over Ebola, assuring the public that no confirmed case of the disease has been recorded in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, gave the assurance on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as the state intensified preparedness measures following the Federal Government’s confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to reports, the state government has activated emergency response centres and strengthened surveillance to ensure the prompt detection and management of any suspected case.

Ajetunmobi said preparations to respond to possible outbreaks of Ebola and other infectious diseases had begun as far back as June 2026, with measures aimed at strengthening the state’s readiness and response capacity.

The commissioner said surveillance units had been activated across all 33 local government areas, while information materials on Ebola transmission and prevention had been distributed to health facilities. Healthcare workers have also been directed to maintain strict infection prevention and control measures, including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment.

She further disclosed that the Infectious Disease Centre at Olodo was prepared to manage suspected cases, with trained healthcare personnel and laboratory teams available to support testing and response efforts. The state is also working with relevant ministries and the Epidemiology Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, under a One Health approach to strengthen preparedness.

Residents were advised to observe regular handwashing, avoid contact with the blood and other body fluids of suspected or confirmed cases, and seek prompt medical attention if they develop symptoms such as sudden fever, severe headache, muscle or joint pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, extreme tiredness or unexplained bleeding.
