INEC Debunks Fake Governorship Candidates’ List for Six States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked a fake online publication claiming to contain a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states ahead of the 2027 elections.

The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

In a public notice issued on Monday and shared through its official social media platforms, the commission stated that the publication did not originate from it.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice read.

INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the document and avoid sharing it, advising the public to verify electoral information through its official website, inecnigeria.org, and verified social media accounts under the handle @inecnigeria.

The warning comes two days after the commission released its final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections.

Following the publication, concerns emerged over the reported omission of some candidates, including the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, respectively. The published documents did not state the reasons for their reported absence.

The commission urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources for accurate updates on electoral activities.
