The Federal Government has approved an increase in the feeding allocation for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, with implementation expected to commence in 2027.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the Cross River State orientation camp in Obubra.
Nafiu said the Budget Office had been notified of the adjustment, adding that the revised allocation would take effect next year.
He urged corps members to manage their finances responsibly, avoid unnecessary spending and develop a consistent saving habit to prepare for life after national service.
The NYSC chief also advised them to prioritise their safety, particularly when travelling. He warned against embarking on journeys after 6 p.m., recommending that corps members undertaking long trips stop at a safe location and continue the following day where necessary.
Nafiu further cautioned against resting in exposed public places or sleeping in groups at filling stations while travelling, noting that such practices could make corps members vulnerable to security threats.
He advised those who encounter security concerns on the road to seek assistance at military formations, police stations or Department of State Services (DSS) offices and contact the NYSC hotline.
On the welfare of corps members, the Director-General pledged to strengthen engagement with relevant stakeholders to address infrastructure challenges at the Obubra orientation camp.
He also encouraged corps members to acquire practical and vocational skills that could improve their employment prospects and provide alternative sources of income after completing their service year.
Nafiu cited cosmetology and traditional hairstyling as examples of skills that could help young Nigerians develop additional career and business opportunities.
Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, commended the Director-General’s visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of corps members.
Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered at the camp and were adapting to the structured orientation programme.
The planned increase in feeding allocation is expected to take effect in 2027, although the specific amount of the revised budget was not disclosed in the announcement.
