The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the 2026/2027 Legal Year ceremony, marking another milestone in their professional careers and the country’s legal profession.
The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) announced the development on Monday through a news flash on its official X account, accompanied by photographs and video footage showing the new senior advocates taking their oath.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is one of the highest professional distinctions available to legal practitioners in the country. It recognises lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional professional ability and met the established criteria for elevation to the inner bar.
However, the conferment of the rank also brings greater expectations. Beyond professional recognition, senior advocates occupy an important position in the administration of justice and are expected to uphold the principles of fairness, integrity and respect for the rule of law.
As experienced members of the Bar, they have opportunities to influence legal practice, mentor younger lawyers and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s justice system. Their conduct in and outside the courtroom can also shape public confidence in the legal profession.
The ceremony comes as the judiciary continues to face public expectations for timely justice, judicial independence and greater accountability. These concerns make the responsibilities associated with professional distinction particularly significant.
While the elevation of 68 practitioners represents an important development for the legal community, the lasting value of the honour will depend on how its recipients discharge their professional responsibilities and contribute to the pursuit of justice.
Further details about the newly sworn-in SANs and the individual conferment process were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
